Addiction Recovery
Addiction is a disease that affects the mind body and spirit of a person and his or her family. Feelings of helplessness and hopelessness predominate and, along with common cultural misconceptions, make it extremely difficult for the afflicted individual to break out of old patterns and establish a whole and healthy lifestyle. As one person in recovery eloquently stated "addiction is not discriminatory".
Problematic addiction is not limited to the use of substances such as alcohol, marijuana, methamphetamines, narcotics and other legal or illegal drugs, but also extends to any form of avoidance of core emotional issues. Other common types of problematic addiction include relationships that are co-dependent, gambling, excessive shopping, food, and various forms of isolation. All of the above lead to disconnection within oneself and from family, friends and other forms of support along with the dissolution of personal goals and endeavors.
Recovery from addiction is possible when an individual reaches out for help and addresses the core emotional issues that drive the impulse to escape. Addiction education is also necessary to provide concrete knowledge of common addiction issues. Sometimes medical intervention is necessary.
*The first step is to reach out for help*
Maui Center for Experiential Therapy offers an experiential therapy program using horses that directly parallels those currently being used at Aloha House on Maui and at Hazelden Treatment Center in Minnesota which works as an excellent adjunct therapy to the well established 12 step programs that are the standard in addiction treatment.
